New Westminster lovingly preserves its past alongside present developments. Several family events are hosted throughout the entire year, the largest one being the Hyack Festival taking place in May. New West Senior Secondary (NWSS) and all our elementary schools have a reputation of outstanding teachers who provide a rich array of high quality educational services in a caring and supportive environment. They strive to include and involve parents and the community extensively in the education of children and place a high priority on outstanding integrative services for special needs students. Parks and Recreation New Westminster is understandably proud of its Parks & Recreation Department that allows sports enthusiasts of all types and levels to enjoy both indoor and outdoor opportunities. Both Senior and Junior Salmonbellies have won Canadian Lacrosse Championships and two rugby clubs - Douglas and Pocomo - call this city their home. The Canada Games pool houses an Olympic size pool and full workout facilities that accommodate every level of fitness.
